After a near twenty year break from brass (played electric bass throughout that period) I convinced the wife to let me spend a little less than $300 on a Selman 15001 four rotary valve oval euphonium.

Things kind of snowballed from there as I started to find my buzz again.

I found the Conn listed in my sig about two months ago, and have been casting around for an upright bell compensating horn for a while.

I have turned into a bit of a brass junkie, in addition to the four horns in my sig, I've acquired a Blessing cornet, a Conn 16E mellophonium, and a surprisingly good Cecilio remake of the famous Holton Superbone.

My band teacher is kind enough to let me have both of my school's euphoniums (I'm the only euph player in the entire school!) so I can have one at home and one at school. It makes it so much easier not having to lug it back and forth every morning. Both horns are ancient Yamahas, both horns are junk. I can't unscrew the valves, the middle valve on the better horn is messed up, the slides don't move at all on the worse horn, both have pretty rotten tone, both are dented so badly that they play fairly sharp. We're raising money now to buy me (well, technically, the school) a new one.

I think you should do the horns justice and take them to a shop and have them cleaned and serviced! If they're school horns see if your band director can pay for them!

my horn

Postby Corey Adkins » Thu Feb 11, 2010 10:53 pm

My euphonium is a vintage 1927 Hirsbrunner Exclusive. It received some cosmetic work in the 60's. The valve 1 spit trigger was removed and the hole was sealed with a discreet copper cap. The main tuning slide was given a retro-push button spit blow-hole 8) It's really cool, solid, effective and different. The silver plating is in great shape but tarnishes a little easier than a newer horn. The valves are quiet with amazing response. However she's a picky girl; no cheap valve oils or slide grease. A few dings but nothing major. She's going in the shop in the fall of 2010. The horn has a beautiful lyrical color. The intonation tendancies are amazing in all ranges. Has been playing on a Schilke 51D gold plated mp since 6th grade. Tried the BB1 and likes how the bore is a little more open on it. The open bore allows the extreme highest range on BB1 to speak a little easier than 51D. Honestly I prefer the cup shape and lip plate on 51D. Will be ordering a custom-made 51D opening the bore simular to BB1 and adding a spacer on the stem to fit the shank perfectly. My dream horn is a Stealth Hirsbrunner. Hirsbrunner will be hard to get on the market now being they filed chapter 11 back in Nov 09. Hopes the Hirsbrunner family will build me this Stealth horn one day when money isn't so tight.

My Euphonium

Postby AtticBrass » Thu Feb 25, 2010 3:21 pm

Greetings to all of you. I am new here.
I am still standing in awe...as of last Friday I am an owner of and a beginner on a three valve Euphonium.
Mine is a beginner antique model that was found in an attic. When I got it/bought it, it even had cobwebs inside the bell, all the parts were pretty much frozen, except for the buttons on the valves.
It took until Saturday late evening until it was clean, oiled/greased, and functional. Howbeit, sadly, the mouthpiece is a permanent fixture on the instrument, the music store and a music teacher both have tried to remove it. A recommendation was also made to leave it on. Apparently, someone at one point had shoved a small bore mouthpiece into a large bore instrument, and it stuck for good. BUT since that time, Saturday night, I have been having the time of my life, learning a new instrument at my age.

Quick question...is there a place on line that has audio sounds of beginner notes? I am acquiring yet another book and this one will have a CD, but I am just curious also, if it does exist so I can be sure I am on the right track right now? I am so thankful for all the teaching that I have experienced already online.

Thanks for this forum!

Blessings.

On my euphonium, i play on a 61/2 al, and a yamaha 5 1/2
I play on a Schilke 51 mouthpiece on my trombone, great jazz sound!
and on my trumpet i love my 3c mouthpiece!
But the horn I really want is a Hirshbrunner of some type, they are my fav so far!

I play on a Yamaha 321s, this will be my 3rd year playing it. I play on a Bach 5G mouthpiece. However my dream euphonium would be: Besson Prestige, York Eminence, or a Willson 2950s. I also have a student Yamaha trombone that I play for jazz ensembles :D

Besson Sovereign 968
SM4 mouthpiece (I might get a SM3 soon)
Loud LM 20 mouthpiece
I like it more than the Willson I tried because of the valves.

I used to play a Yamaha Bass Trombone with a Schilke 59 mouthpiece.

I also own a Conn Director Trombone that is horrable.

I want to try a York some day.

I just bought myself what appears to be a 1959 Olds Studio T-26 4-valve "Baritone" for my birthday. It's pre-scuffed and pre-dented, I think it plays nice, and I'm loving what that 4th piston does both for intonation and for making alternate keys more easily available. I had no idea.

It's been about 40 years since my 3-year stint playing tuba in junior high school. It's coming back very fast, I can tell after only a couple of days. My primary instrument is acoustic guitar now, and I play a little bass guitar too.

My aim for euphonium is to get comfortable playing without sheet music in guitar keys (G, C, D, A, E ... ), enough to play a little root-fifth oompah with some walking transitions, and maybe a few short simple melody lines. Think bluegrass and you won't be far off where I'm aiming. We shall see...
