The IEI course caters to euphonium players and enthusiasts of ALL levels. We hope to bring together a great mix of aspiring young players, talented college students, motivated enthusiasts, and hard working amateurs!!


Participants will be immersed in recitals, chamber music, concerts, focus classes, and master classes. Participants will also have private instruction during the week and choose to perform in master classes as well as being offered solo and ensemble performance experiences at the Institute and in outreach concerts in the community. Participants can also recommend repertoire to be performed by IEI staff during the camp.

Artists and Staff for 2012
 

Matthew Van Emmerik, Australia

Matthew van Emmerik was born in Bendigo, Victoria, Australia in 1978. He is the former principal euphonium player with the Central Band of the Royal Air Force - Uxbridge (United Kingdom) and all Royal Australian Navy Bands respectively. He has also held high profile and principal positions with the worlds leading brass bands including: Black Dyke, Fodens, Leyland, Desford Colliery, Brighouse and Rastrick, Dalewool, Kew Band Melbourne and National Australia Brass.

Matthew recently performed The Philip Wilby Euphonium Concerto with the Tasmanian Symphony orchestra, as the first soloist to perform a euphonium concerto with an Australasian Symphony Orchestra. His playing profile is truly extensive and has performed with the Auckland Philharmonia, Melbourne Symphony, Sydney Symphony and West Australian Symphony Orchestras respectively.

Matthew is the solo euphonium player with Australia’s premiere brass band National Australia Brass and has adjudicated contests all across Australia, New Zealand, the USA and Europe.

Matthew is an Adams Instruments Performing Artist.

Adam Frey, United States

Adam Frey is the Artistic Director of the IEI for the past 6 years and travels the world sharing his music with audiences and students. He has commissioned more than 70 new works and arrangements as well as bringing the euphonium to orchestral audiences with his landmark recordings with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. He has 7 solo recordings with his newest being one of the only euphonium recordings on a major record label, Naxos. He teaches at Emory University and Georgia State University. Adam Frey is a Yamaha Artist.


Fernando Deddos, Brazil

Hailing from Brazil, Fernando Deddos has established himself as one of the most versatile young euphoniumists. He performs as a soloist, chamber musician, and composers regularly. He has performed with the Parana State Symphony Orchestra, for two years with Femusc Professors Orchestra, Porto Alegre Symphony Orchestra, São Paulo State Symphony Orchestra, PUC-PR Symphony, Cordoba Wind Orchestra (Arg.).

At the 2010 ITEC (International Tuba-Euphonium Conference), one of his works (“Rabecando”) received the first prize in the Harvey Phillips award for Composition Excellence and his recording Euphonia Braziliaro also received the first place in the Roger Bobo Awards for Excellence in Recording (ITEC2010).

Fernando Deddos is an Adams Performing Artist.


Steve Rosse, Sydney Symphony Orchestra

The American Steve Rosse enjoys an exotic international career as orchestral tubist, tuba soloist, educator, and presenter of international festivals and other educational events for tuba/ brass. Based in Sydney, Australia as Principal Tuba with the Sydney Symphony in the famed Sydney Opera House, Rosse spends on average 4-5 months a year traveling the globe with his tuba(s), mainly to his favorite destinations: Japan, Thailand, France, and Italy. When in Sydney and while away, he runs the bulk of the Brass Program at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, where he has an all-star list of current and former tuba students from around the globe, many which now occupy major orchestral positions throughout Europe, Asia, and Australia. Rosse has recently performed with the symphony orchestras of Boston, San Francisco, San Diego, Philadelphia, and continues to perform and tour quite often with groups as diverse as the Philadelphia Orchestra to several Sydney-based community brass bands.

Steve Rosse is a Miraphone Performing Artist.

Brian Bowman, University of North Texas

Dr. Brian L. Bowman enjoys a distinguished career as a soloist, clinician, recording artist, educator and administrator. Dr. Bowman has held the principal euphonium position, in addition to being a featured soloist, in each of the bands he has been associated with: The University of Michigan Symphony Band, The United States Navy Band, The United States Bicentennial Band, The United States Air Force Band and The River City Brass Band in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

He is in demand as a guest soloist with high school, university, municipal and professional ensembles. He has performed as a soloist in all 50 states, Canada, Mexico, The Virgin Islands, Norway, Finland, Germany, Belgium, Holland, Hungary, Great Britain, France, Italy, Switzerland, Australia, Japan, Tonga Taiwan, Thailand and the People’s Republic of China. He has appeared as tenor tubist with the National Symphony, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Colorado Symphony, the San Francisco Symphony, Oklahoma City Philharmonic, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and the Orchestra Symphonica of Xlapa, Mexico. He has performed concertos with the Lexington Kentucky Symphony, the Sapporo Japan, Symphony Orchestra the North Carolina Symphony and the Madison Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra.

Dr. Bowman is a Willson Performing Artist.

Staff Sergeant Lauren Veronie, US Army Field Band

Staff Sergeant Lauren Veronie serves as euphoniumist with the United States Army Field Band in Washington, D.C. She has been a featured soloist with the Concert Band in eighteen states and regularly performs with the Field Band’s Brass Quintet. SSG Veronie is a graduate of the University of North Texas, where she studied euphonium with Brian L. Bowman. She graduated Summa cum laude in 2005 with a bachelor’s degree in performance and went on to earn a master’s in 2007.

SSG Veronie was the winner of the 2004 Potomac International Euphonium Competition. She has recorded extensively with the North Texas Wind Symphony, performed with the Dallas Wind Symphony and spent her early years with the Houston Symphonic Band. When not on tour with the Field Band, SSG Veronie enjoys hiking, reading science fiction, and cooking Cajun food. She maintains a blog about her travels at www.laureneuph.com.

 

Martin Cochran, Univ of Alabama - Birm.

Dr. Martin Cochran enjoys an extremely active career as a soloist, teacher, clinician, and adjudicator. A former winner of the prestigious Leonard Falcone International Euphonium Competition and the International Tuba Euphonium Conference Solo Competition, he has appeared with numerous ensembles throughout the country, including the United States Army Orchestra, the Georgia Brass Band, and numerous university ensembles. Dr. Cochran is currently Instructor of Music at the University of Alabama-Birmingham, where he teaches euphonium, directs the tuba-euphonium ensemble, and teaches courses in music appreciation. n addition to his musical activities, Dr. Cochran is an assistant instructor of Shotokan karate for the Hirano-Ha Karate Do Association..

Dr. Cochran is a Sterling Performing Artist.

 

Chris Blaha, Appalachian State Univ

Dr. Christopher Blaha joined the music faculty as Assistant Professor of Tuba and Euphonium at Appalachian State in fall 2009. He holds his Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music degrees in tuba performance from the University of Michigan, where he studied with Fritz Kaenzig, and his Bachelor of Music in tuba performance from The Ohio State University. His additional teachers include Wes Jacobs, Marianne Ploger, Ron Bishop and Gary Tirey.

Dr. Blaha was Principal Tuba of the Charleston (SC) Symphony Orchestra from 2004-2008 and has performed with the Detroit Symphony, Grant Park Music Festival, Cincinnati Symphony, Rochester Philharmonic, Toledo Symphony, Columbus Symphony, Ann Arbor Symphony and Winston - Salem Symphony orchestras.

Dr. Tom Gibson returns for his 8th year as an IEI Faculty Member and is one of the most sought after brass performers and teachers in the country. He has performed solo recitals, concerts, master classes, and clinics around the world. He enjoys a triple threat career as a celebrated Trombonist, Conductor, and as a teacher/coach. His degrees are from University of Michigan (B.M.), University of Northern Colorado (M.M.), and The Catholic University of America (D.M.A.).

Prior to moving to Atlanta in 2000, Tom was a member of the U.S. Navy Band in Washington, DC, for 6 years. He currently teaches at Kennesaw State University and produces his WORLD FAMOUS POD CASTS that cover a huge variety of personalities and topics. For more information, visit www.trombonelessons.com.

The Georgia Brass Band returns to the Gala Concert for 2012. The GBB has graced the stage many times at IEI and continues it success as a fine ensemble performing concerts around the state of Georgia. The group recently toured New England in summer 2011 and has earned many honors at the NABBA annual competition. For more information, please visit: www.georgiabrass.com

 
Caryl Conger and Magi Shumanova

Pianist, Caryl Worthington Conger, continues her passion of musical collaboration, performing regularly with wind and brass artists in recitals and conferences throughout the U. S. and abroad including the annual U.S. Army Band Tuba-Euphonium Conferences and the recent ITEA conferences in Finland and Greensboro and Denver. Her special niche of interest has been her collaboration with tuba and euphonium artists including tubists, Daniel Perantoni, Patrick Sheridan, Oystein Baadsvik, Roger Bobo, and Harvey Phillips, and euphoniumists, Steve Mead, Adam Frey, Roger Behrend, and Brian Bowman.

Magdalena Shumanova was born in Pazardzhik, Bulgaria and started playing piano at the age of 4. She attended school at the Secondary Music School "Dobrin Petkov" in Plovdiv, Bulgaria and was awarded the Special Faculty Award for Academic and Performance Excellence as well as soloing with the City Philharmonic Orchestra of Plovdiv playing Saint-Saens' 2nd Concerto for Piano and Orchestra. While attending school there, she studied with Julia Girginova and Svetlana Kosseva and received her diploma in Piano performance and for secondary specialized education in music and art in 2002.

 Concerts, Recitals and Outreach

One of the major aspects of the IEI will be the HUGE  variety of concerts that participants and staff will both perform and listen.
Recitals will be presented by the IEI Artists and Staff and Participants will take part in participant recitals and also the Wednesday and Saturday evening concerts.

Travel, Tuition, Housing and Meal Information

 Travel

Travelers can utilize Atlanta Hartsfield International (ATL) for arrival by air. Shuttle service (20 minutes one-way) by IEI staff will be available to Emory. during the standard arrival and departure times listed below. Hosted at Emory University in Atlanta, GA, the IEI Festival will be utilizing the new Donna and Marvin Schwartz Center for Performing Arts. The IEI has access to rehearsal space for ensemble and individual repetition as well as performances during the course. All facilities, housing, meals, and recreation can be reached without automobile transportation.

ARRIVAL - Plan to arrive between 12 to 4 PM on Sunday, June 17. Flights should arrive between 12 PM and 3 PM if possible.
DEPARTURE - Plan to depart in the morning on Sunday, June 24. Flights should depart between 9 AM and 11 AM if possible.

Scholarship Opportunities and Payment Options
These are scholarship opportunities and ways to reduce your overall tuition costs. It will help to mail your application early.

  • Pre-Registration - Applications and Tuition Payments postmarked before March 1, 2012 will receive a $50 discount. NOTE: This will also help secure your desired master class and private lesson instructor.
  • Payment Plans - To assist with players desiring to spread tuition and housing payments over a longer time period, applicants can begin making monthly payments starting with Pre-Registration as early as December. Depending on Tuition options, scholarships, and housing selections, 5 payments of around $150 will cover Full Tuition, and Housing and Meals for the IEI Festival.

Housing and Meal Options

All Participants and Staff are encouraged to reside on campus at Emory University with options for single and double rooms (IEI can help you find a roommate). All linens and towels will be provided. Participants may also practice in their rooms. Emory food service offers an excellent all-you-can-eat buffet style meal plan with vegetarian options. Three meals will be provided each of the full days, Monday through Saturday, as well as dinner on the first night and breakfast on the check-out day.

Please note: High School students are REQUIRED to stay on campus or with a parent locally.

Please note: Full Week Participants that choose to stay Off-Campus are required be on the Lunch and Dinner Meal Plan. Lunches will be catered from a variety of local restaurants.

    IEI Participants will also have access to Woodruff Physical Education Center at no charge for both fitness and swimming duties.
 


Participant Duties

  • To maximize the experience for attendees, participants are asked to prepare at least one lyrical and one technical solo as well as any interesting chamber music scores and parts.
  • Participants will take part in both internal IEI recitals as well as have the possibility of performing on an outreach concert.
  • Participants will receive private lessons during the week.
    NOTE: Applicants can request three preferred teachers and will be filled based on receipt of the application and payment of tuition.
  • Participants will also be offered to perform in specific Focus and Master Classes.
    NOTE: Applicants can request three preferred teachers or topics listed in order of preference, but slots are limited and will be filled based on receipt of the application and payment of tuition.
  • Participants can also nominate specific works to be performed by IEI Staff during the week. There is no guarantee for programming, but the IEI staff would like the week to be educational and focused on the participants and their desires for learning and performing.
