One of the classic show pieces in the repertoire, Pantomime has been scored for most large ensemble performance mediums.  This only qualifies its stature as one of the most performed, studied, and enjoyed solos.  It also remains very challenging due to the endurance requirements of the high lyrical statements based on a rising octave motive in the opening as well as the high tessitura of the exuberant 10/8 section that blends the brass band world with a hint of rhythm made famous by West Side Story.  A lyrical 5/4 section provides an interlude before returning to the 10/8 and a rollicking coda in 2/4 that demonstrates the technical agility of the euphonium in the key of E-flat.  There are some extended lip slurs and trills at the conclusion climaxing with the summit e-flat”.  As a proper brass band work, it concludes with every brass players dream: something high, fast, and loud!!
